Millions Join The Hunt: Mega Edition, One Takes Top Prize
Last year, our platform events received a total of half a billion visits. This year’s first platform-wide event, The Hunt: Mega Edition, brought tens of millions of players to the event hub to compete for a $1 million grand prize. The event ran over 11 days and was active 24/7. Approximately 26% of the audience was from APAC, 31% came from EMEA, and the remaining 21% came from the Americas.
Ryan, a 20-year-old expert Roblox player and live streamer from New York, walked away with the grand prize by leveraging his skills and ability to navigate challenges. He outdueled nine other finalists in an intense, eight-round battle. Millions watched the four-hour live-streamed tournament on April 4, hosted by Roblox Head of Developer Community JParty, esports broadcaster Mimi “aEvilCat” Wermcrantz, and Roblox influencer MeEnyu. This was the first live event finale held at Roblox headquarters in San Mateo, California.
“The Hunt: Mega Final is really a first-of-its-kind event,” Wermcrantz said. “The competition’s games were all so different from one another. The winner had to be adept at everything from soccer to arena FPS all the way to fashion. With that kind of variety, and stakes as high as $1 million, I couldn’t wait for The Hunt: Mega Final and was excited to be part of it. It’s a great opportunity for the massive Roblox playerbase to get exposed to video games as a sport, and also for esports fans to check out a game they may not have otherwise.”
Deciphering Clues in The Hunt: Mega Edition
The initial stages of the event featured 25 games with quests designed specifically to complement the event’s treasure hunt dynamic, each offering hidden tokens. We shared clues for solving the quests on our social channels and in the event hub. The best players recognized that the clues hinted at additional games and quests where they could collect Mega tokens. With those, they unlocked access to hidden levels of the hub and puzzles they could solve to make further progress.
For example, users visiting Bayside High School discovered rumors of students mysteriously disappearing and then reappearing as perfectly behaved versions of themselves. As a bizarre energy flowed around the school, users would try to avoid capture by the principal to earn a token. In untitled tag game, users escaped a mysterious facility controlled by Guy through stealth and parkour, and claimed a Mega token while leaping through a futuristic urban landscape. Players could then attempt to escape into a dystopian city to find and keep the token for themselves. Users could also earn dozens of special UGC items, such as Fractal Wings, the Blanc Techpack, or the Cape of Fragmentation.
The Hunt: Mega Final, 10 Players, 1 Winner
Based on their performance during the main event, the top 10 players were selected to compete in the final. Over the course of eight rounds the finalists, who are from the U.S., Canada, and Lithuania, tested their abilities in newly created challenges showcasing a variety of Roblox experiences: Dress to Impress, Super League Soccer, RIVALS, Blade Ball, Slap Battles, DOORS, Driving Empire, and Tower of Hell.
To make the final even more special, we featured new modes in several of the experiences. For example, Dress to Impress Group, the developers behind Dress to Impress had a new mode that allowed special guest judges to rate the finalists outfits. For Doors, developer LSplash had a fast-paced, competitive ranked mode that was full of surprises for the finalists.
“I just went with the flow and had major fun with it,” winner Ryan said of his approach to the tournament. “I wasn’t doing great in the beginning, but once I got into the top four, I felt like I just had to lock in that win. I was playing for the experience of it, [and] I would love for one of these events to happen in the future again and for more people to have this kind of joyfulness and experience.”
Ryan explained that his experience designing augmented reality games helped him solve some of the puzzles in The Hunt: Mega Edition. He also knows that his victory came against some very talented competitors. “We were all top 10, and it was an experience to just even get here, to Roblox headquarters. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and we all felt that ‘whatever happens, happens’. We were already the best of the best.”
This event was all about bringing our global community together and highlighting the amazing experiences built by Roblox creators. We will continue to push the boundaries to surprise our Roblox community with new events in the future, and are thrilled to congratulate our latest winner.
